Shaping up: Incorporating curvy furniture in your home

When you think of the staple pieces of furniture in your living spaces, large sofas and other seating likely come to mind. After all, these items serve a practical purpose and are often the first thing you see when you enter a room.

If you’re looking to upgrade your current furniture for a unique design, shaped seating arrangements could be the perfect interior decor element. We spoke with David Haseley, the Sr. Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing at Decorating Den Interiors, to get his take on this current furniture trend and how you can incorporate it into your own home.

What is curved furniture?

Shaped furniture differs from your traditional seating options because of its uniquely defined architecture. Curved seating without any sharp corners is a great complement to other rounded furniture and decor pieces in the space, like a coffee table or accent table. “Curvy furniture is all over the market,” Haseley said. “Curves and round shapes are associated mostly with softness and classic design.”

Unlike oversized and bulky sofas, a curved seating arrangement with rounded corners instantly adds a more elegant yet relaxed feel to a space. These furniture items invite family and friends to sit down and relax while also serving as an eye-catching staple piece in your living room. Additionally, their shape makes them the perfect place for holding conversations and entertaining as those seated can better see each other while on the same sofa.

Ideal for large spaces

While curved seating can be added to most living spaces, its distinct shape lends itself better to larger rooms.

“It makes perfect sense with the open floor plans we see today,” Haseley added. “Furniture placement has moved out from the walls, and more and more is curated to float out in a room.”

Many new homes have open floor plans, so it’s only practical to fill them with larger furniture pieces that are not flush against the wall. “Curvy furniture, from a practical point, is also easier to get around,” Haseley added.

He also noted that while curvy furniture is best suited for an open floor plan, items like chairs, sofas and sectionals in all sizes are being created in this unique shape. If you have existing furniture pieces in your living area or want to add curved seating to a smaller space, it’s still possible to do so. A curved chair or smaller sofa can easily be incorporated into these areas without making the room feel crowded.

A retro style with a modern twist

While inspired by retro decor, today’s curved furniture is very different from the mid-century pieces you may be imagining. Haseley notes that many furniture manufacturers are designing upholstered chairs, for example, with details that make the back as attractive as the front. Having your sofa floating away from the walls in a ro

om ensures that the craftsmanship of the upholstery on all sides of the furniture is on display. “We also see what is termed an ‘inside/out’ effect,” Haseley explained. “Which is using one fabric on the chair’s front and a different, coordinating fabric on the back.”Using two complementary fabrics can make your decor uniquely your own.
