How to create the most eco-friendly living space for 2021

As the new year is fast approaching, you may be thinking about what your resolutions will be. If one of your goals is to live a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle, that can start with making some simple changes in your own home.

Here are some tips to help you create the most eco-friendly living space for 2021:

Improve your green thumb

You know that living plants are good for the environment, but did you realize they can also benefit your living spaces? Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released by most synthetic products we use and can build up in enclosed spaces. Plants are essential for (and in some cases cheaper and more effective than air filters) absorbing these toxins and returning oxygen back into the air.

If the thought of having plants in your home is stressful, there are plenty of options that are indoor-friendly and easy to maintain. You can even have some potted herbs in the kitchen that serve as air purifiers and an addition to any meal.

Invest in smart devices

There’s truly a smart device or mobile application for everything these days. Adding smart devices in your living spaces are not only convenient for when you need to turn on a light or set the temperature from your phone, they can also help you save on energy costs.

Smart thermostats, fans and even TVs can be programmed to maximize their efficiency. For instance, the temperature in your home can automatically be turned up or down during certain hours of the day when you are not home or sleeping to conserve energy.

Incorporate natural materials and textiles

As previously mentioned, many synthetic materials release VOCs into the air. Additionally, some of the manufacturing processes are not the most sustainable. Choosing natural materials like wood, rattan or cotton for your furniture and upholstery are a good way to avoid any plastic waste.

Use eco-friendly paint

Paint is another substance that typically releases VOCs, according to Environmental Conscience. Luckily, there are some alternative eco-friendly options for something that is used for remodels and renovations often. Some companies specialize in producing paints with low amounts of VOCs, so you can properly dispose of your existing paint and begin using a more environmentally friendly option that is good for your surroundings and your health.

Find vintage furniture

Finally, one of the easiest ways to create an eco-friendly living space is to find your furniture at antique or vintage stores. Perhaps something you’re already doing!  New furniture is pricey and the cost of production takes a toll on the environment. But older pieces that are being upcycled are typically one-of-a-kind, cost effective and are better for the environment.

Older furniture doesn’t mean dingy or outdated. Many vintage pieces have been repurposed to fit a modern and stylish household. So it’s likely that you can find furniture to fit your theme. Similarly, if you need decor, you can find some steals at your local thrift shop. Even scour your own backyard for a fresh flower arrangement or holiday wreath made of greenery.
