Let your child pick the right color for their bedroom. Here is how…

Most young children love bright punchy colors like Chartreuse or Hot Pink. Does that mean you will be redecorating in 2 years? Probably.  Life gets busy with kids, so when choosing the right color to paint a child’s room, consider the fact you may not want to paint for another few years. Here are some tips to help.

Consider a monochromatic theme:

Kids tend to want all the bright pretty colors. Pick one and play off it. A combination of hues within the same range are quite lovely together. Tones of blue, greens and teals are wonderful bedroom colors. They promote a calm atmosphere while stimulating concentration and feel safe for growing children. As children grow, the monochromatic theme can be easily modified from Grumpy Cat or Minecraft to a young adult themed room.

Pull from a source:

Does the child have a favorite piece of art, book illustration or stuffed animal? It’s easy to color match or coordinate when you have a reference. The art doesn’t even have to be present in the room. Look at your subject, this allows you to see how the maybe existing furniture tones or bedding will applied to the design.

One wall:

Many young boys tend to like rich colors like reds or deep blues. But that can make the room appear dark or drab. Consider painting just one wall, then use a lighter hue or complimentary color on other walls. Keep in mind which wall you paint dark. This can actually aid the benefit of sleep time, but not exactly stimulating for virtual or home school.

Paint the door wall:

Really rejecting the color your child picked, but cannot compromise? Here is an old trick from my mother. Paint the door wall only.  When walking down the hall you will not see it. This is also a great tip for Teens who love covering their rooms with posters or photo collages. From the doorway, the room looks concise and cleverly decorated. Once inside the room kids will love the freedom you allowed on that one entry wall.

Contrast your colors:

Painting horizontal stripes or such can be fun. Many Low VOC paints these days contain a primer base. So these makes getting creative with multiple contrasting colors easy.  But be aware. If your young child is in love with super rich contrasting tones, like blacks and whites-  you may have more than a decorating dilemma.  They could have a type of color deficiency. Younger children cannot always articulate to parents their inability to distinguish certain colors. A color blind child’s favorite color is usually black.

Use color theory:

Have multiple children using the same nursery over time? Consider color theory – any baby blue will turn purple when you add pinks to accessories like windows or bedding. But that same color is great for boys! Just switch out those pinks for neutrals, browns, and greens. Voila!  You have the perfect boys room theme.

Hopefully, these tips can help you and your children make great color choices for their rooms. Color choices to grow and enjoy for years to come.
